We have a similar price range to that of the internal combustion engine vehicles and in the last 10 years the price of the electric batteries have reduced drastically say about by 90%.We are seeing huge electric automotive sales all around the globe. In the case of 3 wheelers there have been a huge jump in the sales.
How is the industry looking and what are the ground level scenario?
In the case of our country the customer readiness is still need to be attained. The people lack the confidence in the sector and the confidence can only gained only we develop more facilities, charging stations and better improvements in the range is seen.
Whenever we look at the EV industry it is seen that we only focus on the 2,3 and 4 wheelers and we miss a big chunk of it that is the public transport. The public transport is a very important player in the case of the EV sector, I will tell you why.
All around the globe the EV revolution is taking place because of the environmental aspect of it. But when we look into it it is seen that the development of the EV batteries there are environmental impacts we cane say it in short the we are replacing one pollution with another pollution that we have yet to know off. Another aspect is if the EV is again going to give that congestion, and traffic that we face in the cities that we currently face with the IC engine vehicles all these development wont be creating an ease in our day today life.
Therefore the key focus should be given for the development of public transport. Again when we look at the 2 wheelers we can see that lot of the major players in our country has not yet entered the market. The industry is still eagerly waiting to see the customer response to the EV market.
Policies and norms
The push for this market starts from the commercial aspect of the automobile sector. As I have said in the beginning there has been a huge jump in the sale of 3 wheelers which shows that ev is getting accepted in the commercial sector. One of the key feature is the reduced taxes while the road tax on the IC can be around 3-4 lakhs this is 0 in the case of EVs this is a huge advantage and also the GST while there is 28% on IC engine vehicles it is only 5% for the EVs. Apart from that a lot of other incentives are provided by the government.
Way forward
We should be more focused on the public transport sector as said earlier. We should take a deep look at how the used batteries can be disposed, on how the resources can be reused all these things needs to be checked. We are still lagging behind in the 2 wheeler sector as most of the major players have not yet entered the market this needs to change because the 2 wheeler sector is one such sector which we cannot afford to loose internationally.
The industry needs to reimagine itself in terms of the servicing, long term costs. The plus point of EV is that lot of other sectors like IT is also involved all these components need to go hand in hand in the development.
